NOPSEMA is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve workplace productivity, while ensuring that people remain accountable for all decisions. We are committed to using AI in a safe, secure and ethical manner.
NOPSEMA currently uses AI to support internal corporate and enabling functions only.
- meeting transcription and document summarisation
- virtual assistants to streamline workflows and improve efficiency
- data analysis to assist with interpreting structured and unstructured information.
NOPSEMA does not use AI in regulatory service delivery, including compliance, auditing or decision-making. Where AI is used, a human-in-the-loop approach applies. AI may assist with tasks, but all decisions and actions are made by NOPSEMA staff.
If NOPSEMA expands its use of AI, or introduces any public-facing AI capability, this statement will be updated to describe:
- the purpose and intended outcomes of the AI use
- any direct interactions the public may have with AI systems
- how AI systems are monitored, evaluated and reviewed
- compliance with relevant legislation, policies and regulatory obligations
- how risks and potential negative impacts are identified and mitigated.
NOPSEMA aligns with the Australian Policy for the responsible use of AI in government and is committed to transparent and responsible AI use. (Template language)
Oversight of AI at NOPSEMA is provided through existing governance arrangements, with the Chief Information Officer acting as the Accountable Official responsible for AI oversight and risk management. (Template language)
NOPSEMA's approach to AI governance includes:
- applying a risk-based approach, with higher-risk uses subject to stronger controls and oversight
- developing an internal AI usage policy aligned with whole-of-government requirements
- managing current AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot, through existing ICT, information security and risk management frameworks
- providing all staff with access to training on the responsible and ethical use of AI.

AI transparency statement
At NOPSEMA, we are excited to explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance workplace productivity in a way that keeps humans at the centre of our decision making. We are pledged to doing this in a safe, secure, and ethical fashion.
Current AI usage
Our AI usage is focused on enhancing corporate and enabling functions by way of AI tools such as:

- deep data analysis, that helps us understand both structured and unstructured material.
NOPSEMA does not currently use AI in service delivery - specifically AI is not used in compliance, auditing or decision-making without having a human-in-the-loop. This means that while AI technologies may be used to assist in various tasks, any final decisions or actions are made by a human.
Future AI adoption
Should we decide to extend our AI usage, or implement any public facing AI capabilities, we will update this statement to reflect this, including:
- our purpose and objectives behind adopting AI
- any direct interactions the public may have with AI systems
- measures to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of AI systems
- compliance with relevant legislation and regulations
- efforts to mitigate any potential negative impacts of AI.
