AIATSIS Artificial Intelligence Transparency Statement

This artificial intelligence (AI) transparency statement provides the public with relevant information about AIATSIS use of AI. This statement is required under the Policy for the responsible use of AI in government (the Policy). (Template language)

The AIATSIS vision is a world in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and cultures are recognised, respected, celebrated and valued. We use AI where it can support the achievement of our vision and our strategic priority areas as outlined in our corporate plan. We are committed to continually improving our capabilities to meet current and future needs, and AI is becoming increasingly important to ensure we foster innovation and adaptiveness in how we tell the story of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia, create opportunities for people to encounter, engage with and be transformed by that story, and support and facilitate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural resurgence and shape our national narrative.

We engage AI-assisted tools where they will support us to improve the efficiency and accessibility of our legislated functions and deliver innovative digital and data-driven client services and staff experiences.

The AIATSIS Chief AI Officer is the Executive Director of the Ngurra Transformation Group.

The AIATSIS Accountable Official for AI is the Chief Information Officer. The Accountable Official is accountable for governance of AI and implementation of the policy within AIATSIS. (Template language)

To ensure appropriate monitoring and governance of AI, AIATSIS has implemented the Policy for the responsible use of AI in government, the Technical standard for government’s use of artificial intelligence and application of Australia’s AI Ethics Principles. AIATSIS has also implemented additional risk-scaled governance mechanisms for example, an internal AI Usage Register. (Template language)
